Lehigh and Bucknell meet in pivotal showdown

2/21/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In one of the most anticipated Patriot League regular season matchups in recent memory, the past two league champions, Lehigh and Bucknell, get set to meet on Wednesday evening.  These two teams have been red hot of late, with the Mountain Hawks having won six straight and 13 of 14, while the Bison have reeled off 12 victories in their last 13, becoming the first Patriot League school in history to be nationally ranked along the way (No. 24 at the time).  The average margin of victory in the last seven meetings between Lehigh and Bucknell has been a mere 5.1 points, including a five-point Bison victory last month in Bethlehem.  Lehigh has not won in Lewisburg since a 60-56 victory on January 15, 2003, which was the first-ever game played at Sojka Pavilion.

The Mountain Hawks canned a season-high 12 three-pointers in their win over Lafayette, which were their most three’s since hitting 13 vs. Colgate in last season’s Patriot League Tournament.  As a team during league play, Lehigh is second in the Patriot League in three-point percentage, hitting 40.2% from beyond the arc.  Mitch Gilfillan (46.8%) and Jose Olivero (46.2%) rank four-five in individual three-point shooting percentage, respectively.

Wednesday’s game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:05 from a sold out Sojka Pavilion.  The contest will be televised live on WFMZ-TV as well as Fox College Sports Atlantic and lehighsports.com with Steve Degler and Nathan Jameson on the call.  The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM in the Lehigh Valley and around the world on lehighsports.com with veteran Matt Kerr and Greg Falkenbach ’72 providing the commentary.
