Mountain Hawks roll past Cornell for first win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh placed four players in double figures, led by senior Jose Olivero with 24, while classmate Jason Mgebroff added 18 on seven of ten shooting as the Mountain Hawks rolled to a 90-71 victory over the Cornell Big Red on Friday evening at Stabler Arena.  Senior Kyle Neptune scored 16 points, junior Bryan White pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds and Lehigh shot 50 percent on the evening to pick up its first win of the season and improve to 1-3 on the year.  Cornell falls to 2-1 on the young season.

 

Lehigh raced out to a 37-21 halftime lead behind the play of freshman Marquis Hall who scored all ten of his points in the opening half on a perfect four-of-four shooting night.  The Mountain Hawks, who shot 50 percent on the evening, dominated on the backboards, out rebounding their opponents 44-25 for the game, and Lehigh handed out 16 assists, led by Hall’s six and Olivero’s five.

 

The Mountain Hawks sank 33-44 free throws on the evening and had 13 turnovers.  Cornell shot 40 percent from the field and received 20 points from Brian Kreeefer, as the Big Red sank eight three pointers on the night and turned the ball over just ten times.

 

Lehigh came out on fire, jumping out to a 9-2 lead at the 17:41 mark when Hall hit a jumper in the lane.  The lead ballooned to ten at 21-11 with 10:47 when Hall sank a three-pointer off of an assist from sophomore Matt Szalachowski, and after Olivero sank a three of his own with 7:07 left in the opening half, the Mountain Hawks found themselves up 27-14.  Lehigh’s largest lead of the first half came with 2:42 to go when Neptune drilled a three to put the home team in front 34-15

 

In the second half the Mountain Hawks went up by 20 when Mgebroff completed a three-point play with 16:25 to go in the second half.  Lehigh’s lead would hover around the 18-point mark would the majority of the half, swelling to as many as 22 with 7:03 left when freshman Zahir Carrington, who had two emphatic dunks on the evening, sank a free throw.    

 

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks welcome the Pioneers of Sacred Heart to Stabler Arena.  Game time is set for 3:30 and tickets can be purchased at the arena box office prior to tip-off.
