Playoff berth at stake as Lehigh visits Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh heads to Hamilton, N.Y. this weekend to wrap-up the Patriot League regular season against Colgate in a game with major post-season implications. The Mountain Hawks (5-11 overall, 1-3 Patriot) enter the weekend tied with Bucknell for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Patriot League tournament. A Lehigh victory on Saturday, would qualify Lehigh for the tournament for the third straight season.

The Brown and White travel to Colgate on the heels of a 3-2 non-league victory at Drexel on Wednesday. Sophomore Kara Zweizig scored the game winning goal on Wednesday with just under three minutes to play. Zweizig ranks second on the Mountain Hawks with six goals and 13 points. Junior Christy Smith also found the back of the cage against the Dragons, netting her team-best seventh goal of the season.

Colgate will be looking to snap a seven game losing streak when Lehigh visits on Saturday. The Raiders (2-12 overall, 0-4 Patriot) are coming off losses to Lafayette and Columbia last weekend. Goalkeeper Jacque DeMarco, the Raiders’ lone senior has led Colgate defensively all season, while freshman Katelyn Nerbonne leads the Colgate attack with six goals and 14 points.

Lehigh will qualify for next weekend’s Patriot League tournament with a victory, but the Mountain Hawks will be keeping an eye on the other two league games as well. Bucknell travels to Lafayette on Saturday. A Lehigh victory combined with a Lafayette win puts the Mountain Hawks in the tournament as the No. 4 seed, while a Mountain Hawk victory paired with a Bison victory creates a three-way tie, with the Leopards being the odd-team out in the tiebreaker. In that instance Lehigh would be the No. 3 seed, by way of the Mountain Hawks 3-1 win at Bucknell in late September.

The other key game in the league pits American against Holy Cross win Washington. Both teams are undefeated in league play and the winner of the game will be the host and top seed for next weekend’s tournament.

The Raiders lead the all-time series versus the Mountain Hawks 13-10-1. Last season, Lehigh snapped a 10 year losing streak to the Raiders with a come-from-behind 3-2 overtime win at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Saturday’s Lehigh-Colgate tilt gets underway at 11:00 am from Tyler’s Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
