Mountain Hawks fall 1-0 at American

10/22/2006 12:00:00 AM | Football

WASHINGTON – Lehigh entered Sunday’s match with American needing a win to secure a Patriot League tournament berth, but the Mountain Hawks will now have to wait a week to learn their postseason fate following a 1-0 loss to the Eagles Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field. The setback drops Lehigh to 7-8-1 overall, while the Eagles improve to 9-6-2. Both teams are 3-2-1 in the Patriot League, and are tied for third in the league standings with 10 points apiece with one league game remaining.

After a scoreless first half, American broke through with the only goal of the game in the 68th minute with Jana Lee scoring on a feed from Irene Karistinos. The Mountain Hawks had several quality chances on the day and out shot American 16-7 but were unable to beat Alison Doyle, who made five saves to earn the shutout.

“We had a lot of great chances, but we just couldn’t put it away,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We’re going to need to win next weekend to get into the tournament, so we’re looking forward to that opportunity.”

Senior Gina Lewandowski led Lehigh with seven shots on Sunday, with senior Lauren Calabrese and junior Michaela Pawlewicz took two shots apiece. Sophomore Julie Kafka stopped two shots in goal for the Mountain Hawks.

The Mountain Hawks have one game left in the regular season, and will need to beat Holy Cross Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament. Saturday’s game gets underway at 4:30 pm and will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio and video powered by Yahoo! Sports.
