BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior back Lauren Volpe was named the Patriot League’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Volpe anchored a unit that allowed just one goal, and added a defensive save in the process, as the Mountain Hawks earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory at Bucknell in their Patriot League opener on Saturday.

The Pennington, New Jersey native has started all nine games in the back for the Brown and White. Volpe has contributed three shots, including one on goal, while helping out a unit that has yielded two goals or less in six out of nine games this year. She added her first defensive save to help preserve Lehigh’s win over the Bison, as the Mountain Hawks won their Patriot League opener for the second straight year.

Volpe is the second Lehigh player to be honored with a weekly field hockey award this season. Freshman Kelly Fox was named the league’s Rookie of the Week after scoring her first two career goals during the week ending September 18. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Palmieri has twice earned honorable mention honors from the league.

The Mountain Hawks (3-6) will look to improve to 2-0 in the Patriot League when they host arch rival Lafayette on Saturday afternoon, but before that Lehigh will play host to Rider on Wednesday night. The game between the Mountain Hawks and Broncs gets underway at 7:00 from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
