Lehigh begins road league play with 3-1 loss

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Mountain Hawks appeared to be headed for their second five-game match in two days on Friday night at the Hart Center, but Holy Cross was able to rally late in the fourth game at the to hand Lehigh its second heartbreaking loss in two days.  The Crusaders, who also put together a late rally in the third game, defeated the Mountain Hawks 3-1 in what was Lehigh’s first of eight-straight road matches.  Game scores were 30-25, 27-30, 30-27 and 32-30.

 

In the third game, the Mountain Hawks, 0-20 overall and 0-6 in league play, trailed by as many as seven points, but rallied back and eventually took the lead.  With Lehigh up 27-24, Holy Cross reeled off six unanswered points to take the game.

 

Lehigh led most of the fourth game, but the Crusaders came up with another perfectly timed rally, tying the game at 29-29 and then taking a 30-29 lead on the next point.  Freshman Suzee Richter’s kill on the next point kept the Mountain Hawks alive, bringing the score to 30-30.  However, Holy Cross got its final two points to put the match away.

 

Senior Michelle Schwendenmann recorded her sixth double-double, her fifth against Patriot League opponents, tallying a team-high 17 kills and 11 digs.  Richter hit a match-best .348 while senior Cassidy Maumus had a match-best 23 digs.

 

Christine Strawson also had a double-double as she recorded a match-high 24 kills and 11 digs.  Anchoring the defense was Valerie Mora, who had 21 digs.

 

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon in West Point, N.Y. when they take on the Army Black Knights.  Match time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
