Mountain Hawks roll past American in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a career-high 19 points from junior Adrienne Blount, Lehigh cruised past American 60-41 on Saturday afternoon at Bender Arena to give the Brown and White its first road victory of the season.  Junior Sara Ellis and senior Jenny Callan also hit double figures for Lehigh, scoring 14 and 13 points on the day.  The Mountain Hawks won their eighth straight Patriot League opener dating back to the 1998-99 season and upped their overall record to 6-8, 1-0 in league play.  The Eagles, who saw the Brown and White win for just the second time in school history on their home floor, drop to 3-11 overall and 0-1 in Patriot League action.

Using a suffocating defense, Lehigh held the Eagles to just 12 first half points on 17 percent shooting, as the Mountain Hawks roared their way to a 19-point halftime lead.  Blount led the Brown and White with 13 first half tallies and she added dive rebounds, while Ellis and Callan both hit for eight points.  Claire Sullivan dished out five assists as Lehigh hit on 41 percent from the field and out rebounded American 26-17.  The Mountain Hawks used a 21-8 run to end the half that catapulted them into the big lead, as Blount hit for 11 of those 21 points.

The Eagles were led on offense by Tara Williams with four points, while Tala Hadavi and Pam Stanfield each hit for three tallies.  Tish Curry pulled down a team-best four boards and Hadavi handed out two assists, as the home team sunk just five of 30 shots from the field.

American was finally able to get its offense going in the second half, but its defense was not able to stop Lehigh for any significant period of time, resulting in a comfortable Mountain Hawk lead for the remainder of the contest.  The Brown and White saw its cushion hover between 15 and 20 points for the majority of the second half, and used a nice balanced scoring attack to secure the victory.

Lehigh shot 40 percent from the floor for the game, while holding the Eagles to 27 percent.  The Brown and White dished out 15 assists, led by Sullivan’s ten, and sunk 15 of 18 free throws, including a 10 of 12 showing in the second half.  American’s scoring leader was Williams with 11 points, while Sahara Nusseibeh added ten on the day.  Curry ended the game with eight boards and Hadavi wound up with five assists.

Lehigh will return to action on Tuesday evening when the Mountain Hawks welcome Navy to Stabler Arena.  Game time is scheduled for 7:05 and tickets can be purchased before tip-off at the arena box office.
