Mountain Hawks swept by American in Washington

WASHINGTON – American been the dominant team in Patriot League volleyball since joining the league in 2001 and the Eagles showed why on Friday night, with a 3-0 victory over Lehigh at Bender Arena. Game scores were 30-14, 30-28 and 30-16 as American won its 68th straight league match and handed the Mountain Hawks their fifth straight defeat. Lehigh is now 3-11, 0-3 in the Patriot League, while the Eagles improve to 10-7 and 4-0 in league matches.

 

The Mountain Hawks gave American their best effort in game two, capitalizing on good serving and the Eagles’ attack errors. Lehigh was able to open up a 14-11 lead and later extended that lead to 25-19. The Mountain Hawks were two points from wrapping up the game and evening the match, leading 28-24 before the Eagles roared back with six unanswered points to go up 2-0 in the match. American went ahead early in game three en route to its third Patriot League sweep of the season.

 

Lehigh had just 24 kills on the evening, led by junior Michelle Schwendenmann’s seven. Shannon Spafford added five kills for the Mountain Hawks, who hit just .024 for the match. American was paced by Cutrina Biddulph’s 12 kills. The Eagles hit at a .349 clip on the evening.

 

The Mountain Hawks continue their road trip on Saturday when they visit Navy. The match gets underway at 4:00 from Annapolis, Md.
