Mountain Hawks bested by Navy, 3-0

10/1/2005 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Lehigh suffered its sixth straight defeat Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks were beaten by Navy, 3-0 at Macdonough Hall. An injury to sophomore setter Kathleen Lafferty Friday night forced head coach Amanda Moran to juggle her lineup. Moran’s players battled hard but could not get past a tough Midshipmen squad as Lehigh falls to 3-12 on the year, 0-4 in the Patriot League. The win ups Navy’s record to 10-5, 3-2 in league matches.

Lehigh was hampered somewhat by the change at the setter position. The Mountain Hawks offense mustered just 22 kills and hit just .036 for the match. Navy hit .272 as a team, had 35 kills and committed just 13 attack errors in the win.

Michelle Schwendenmann led Lehigh with seven kills on the afternoon. Freshmen Tory Marion and Mia Spadoni stepped in for Lafferty, combining for 19 assists.

“The result doesn’t show it, but we played pretty well considering Kat (Lafferty) went down last night,” Moran said. “I thought Tory and Mia stepped in and played well and Julia Atkins stepped in and did a nice job on the outside.”

Atkins had three kills, a pair of digs and assisted on two blocks. Cassidy Maumus had 14 digs for Lehigh.

Beth MacArthur led a balanced Navy attack with eight kills.

The Mountain Hawks return to the court on Tuesday night when they travel to Bucknell. Game time is 7:00 from Lewisburg, Pa.
