The Mountain Hawks started well in game one as a 7-0 run propelled Lehigh to a 10-3 lead. The Crusaders however chipped away at the deficit before holding off Lehigh by two points. In game two Lehigh jumped ahead once again, but this time held on to win the game and even the match. Nikky Barnes had her best match of the season, with 13 kills and 11 digs as the senior captain helped guide her team through the first two games.
“Nikky was great for us tonight,” said head coach Amanda Moran. “She had a number of big kills, especially in game two, which helped us win that game and get back in the match.”
Lehigh had difficulties early in both games three and four, spotting Holy Cross early leads that were eventually too much to overcome. The Crusaders led 7-0 early in game three and 5-0 in game four and were able to hold off late Mountain Hawk rallies in both games to secure their first league win.
“It’s frustrating when you beat a team in every statistical category, but still lose the match,” Moran said. “Every time we got on a roll we weren’t able to keep the momentum. Mistakes were made and now we just have to go back and correct them.”
Michelle Schwendenmann led all players with 21 kills and 24 digs. Shannon Spafford joined Schwendenmann and Barnes in double figures with 12. Lehigh had 61 kills to just 38 for Holy Cross and had a .165 hitting percentage compared to just .062 for the Crusaders.
Defensively, Cassidy Maumus added 20 digs and Kathleen Lafferty had 11 digs to go with 54 assists.
Lehigh returns to the court on Tuesday night when the Mountain Hawks travel to Marist. The match gets underway at 7:00 from
