Mountain Hawks drop Patriot League opener to Army

9/23/2005 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh opened up Patriot League play against one of the league’s top teams Friday night and the Black Knights from Army spoiled the Mountain Hawks’ home opener with a 3-0 win at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Game scores were 30-19, 30-16 and 30-17 as Army handed Lehigh its second straight defeat. Lehigh was plagued by attack errors throughout the match as the Mountain Hawks fell to 3-8 on the season, 0-1 in the Patriot League. Army opens up league play with a win and improves to 7-2 on the season.

“With the week off we were able to put in a specific game plan for Army,” said head coach Amanda Moran. “For the first ten or so points in game one we executed that plan, but after a few long rallies didn’t go our way we reverted to some of the things that hurt us early in the season.”

Game one was the closest of the three. The Mountain Hawks hung with the Black Knights early on, but after working their way within three at 12-9, Lehigh allowed Army to go un a run as the Black Knights built a six point lead, then an eight point lead and went on to win the opening game 30-19.

Lehigh had just 22 kills on the night and the Mountain Hawks committed 30 attack errors, which resulted in a negative hitting percentage for the match.

Junior Shaina Jordan led the Mountain Hawks with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .250. Jordan added a pair of solo blocks on the defensive end. Cassidy Maumus collected 12 digs for Lehigh, while sophomore Kathleen Lafferty added eight to go with 15 assists.

Elizabeth Lazzari led a balanced Army attack with seven kills.

The Mountain Hawks will look to pull even at .500 in the Patriot League on Saturday, when the Mountain Hawks wrap up a short home stand with a match against Holy Cross. First serve set for 4:00 from Grace Hall.
