Lehigh shuts out Villanova for third straight victory

9/2/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Senior Megan Carner scored her first career goal and the Lehigh defense put forth another superb effort Friday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks topped Villanova 1-0 at the Villanova Soccer Stadium. The Brown and White posted their third shutout in as many games despite being out shot on the afternoon. Lehigh improves to 3-0 on the afternoon, while the Wildcats fall to 1-2-1 on the season.

The teams played the first 45 minutes with no score as the Wildcats out shot the Mountain Hawks 11-7 in the opening half. Lehigh finally broke through in the 76th minute as Carner found the back of the net off a rebound from the center of the 18-yard box. The Mountain Hawks defense took care of the rest, facing 12 shots, seven on goal and turning away all seven. Freshman Julie Kafka made 11 saves to post her second career shutout. The Mountain Hawks still have not allowed a goal in three games in 2005.

“The girls really rose to the occasion today,” said head coach Manny Oudin after the game. “They battled for 90 minutes against a good team and picked up a big win for the program.”

Jillian Loyden made 4 saves in a losing effort for Villanova. The Wildcats out shot the Mountain Hawks 23-13 and had five corner kicks, as opposed to three for the Brown and White.

Lehigh will return to the pitch on Wednesday night when the Mountain Hawks will take on La Salle in their 2005 home opener. Game time set for 7:00 from the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem.
