VILLANOVA, Pa. – Lehigh saw its three match winning streak come to an end Saturday night as the Mountain Hawks were beaten 3-0 by Villanova in their final match at the Villanova Volleyball Classic at Nevin Fieldhouse. The Brown and White were unable to overcome some early mistakes as Lehigh wraps up tournament play with a 3-1 record and stands at 3-7 overall. The victory gives the Wildcats the championship in their own tournament as they remain undefeated at 10-0 on the season.

After improving its hitting percentages in its first three tournament matches, Lehigh had only 18 kills and a hitting percentage of -.021.

“We made a lot of silly mistakes in the first two games, and it put is in a hole,” said head coach Amanda Moran. “In the third game, we played much better and fought harder, we were just unable to get back in the match.”

Offensively, Shannon Spafford led the way with five kills for Lehigh. Only Morgan Volkart (four kills), Courtney Cherry and Cindy Eakin (two apiece) had a positive hitting percentage for the Mountain Hawks Defensively, Cassidy Maumus had 11 digs and Kathleen Lafferty had nine to go with 16 assists. Moran was pleased with the play of freshmen Eakin and Tory Marion who contributed to the comeback effort in game three.

Alona Cherkez led all players with 14 kills en route to being named Tournament MVP. Lehigh’s Michelle Schwendenmann and Shannon Spafford were named to the All-Tournament team.

“Overall I’m proud with how we competed this weekend,” said Moran. “We won three matches, we’ve shown significant improvement from the beginning of the season, and I think we’re ready to get into our league schedule in a couple weeks.”

Lehigh will now have almost two weeks off before its next match. The Mountain Hawks return to the court on Friday, September 23 when they will host Army in what will be both the home and Patriot League opener for the Brown and White. First serve set for 7:00 from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
