VILLANOVA, Pa. – Lehigh improved to 3-0 at the Villanova Volleyball Classic as the Mountain Hawks defeated Morgan State 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Nevin Fieldhouse. Game scores were 31-29, 30-18, 28-30 and 30-21 as the Brown and White with their third straight match after starting the year 0-6 and will next face Villanova with the tournament championship potentially at stake. Morgan State falls to 0-7 on the season.

The Bears gave Lehigh a good battle, especially in game one, where the Mountain Hawks needed overtime to grab a 31-29 victory. Morgan State tried to get back into the match after winning the third game, but the Mountain Hawks shut the door with a nine point win in game four.

Offensively, the Mountain Hawks put forth one of their best statistical outputs of the season. Michelle Schwendenmann had a season-high 21 kills and a .372 hitting percentage to lead Lehigh. The junior outside hitter also added four service aces, and six digs on the defensive end.

Schwendenmann was helped out by sophomore middle blocker Shannon Spafford who had a career high 14 kills and .308 hitting percentage. Kathleen Lafferty had another strong afternoon of setting, with 49 assists. Defensively, the Mountain Hawks were credited with 62 digs, nearly a third of them by junior Cassidy Maumus who tallied a season high 20. Morgan Volkart chipped in with nine digs and Nikky Barnes added eight for the Brown and White.

“A couple times during the course of the match we let Morgan State back in, but the girls dug in and fought it out,” said head coach Amanda Moran. “We’re looking forward to going up against Villanova in our final match tonight with a chance to win the tournament championship.”

Lehigh will wrap up play at the Villanova Volleyball Classic Saturday night against the host Wildcats, who are 8-0 on the season heading into an afternoon game against Rider. First serve is set for approximately 7:30 from Nevin Fieldhouse.
