PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh dropped its second straight match on Saturday morning as the Mountain Hawks fell to
Rutgers 3-0 at the Temple University Classic at McGonigle Hall. Game scores were 30-12, 30-21 and 32-30. Lehigh fought to overcome a slow start but couldn’t overcome 27 attacking errors as the Mountain Hawks fall to 2-0 on the young season.
Rutgers improves to 1-1.
It was the Scarlet Knights starting off hot in game one, with a .565 hitting percentage in the opening game. Rutgers did not make any attacking errors and cruised to the 18 point victory in the first game.
In game two Lehigh tightened up while Rutgers was slowed from its blistering pace, but the Scarlet Knights were still able to pull away to take two games to none lead. The Mountain Hawks battled hard in the third game, which went back and forth but in the end, Rutgers pulled out the third game 32-30 to take the match.
Michelle Schwendenmann led the Mountain Hawks with nine kills in the match. Lehigh was done in by 27 attacking errors and a .009 hitting percentage. Lora Yankauskas led Rutgers with nine kills, the Scarlet Knights after a blistering first game hit .194 for the match.
Defensively for Lehigh, Cassidy Maumus led the way with 16 digs. Sophomore Kathleen Lafferty added nine digs to go with 14 assists.
Lehigh will wrap up play at the Temple University Classic on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks will take on Towson at 4:30
