Lehigh drops season opener to Temple

8/26/2005 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh hung tough for most of the evening, but were unable to get past a tough Temple team Friday night as the Mountain Hawks fell to the Owls 3-0 in the Temple University Classic at McGonigle Hall. Game scores were 30-17, 30-20 and 30-18 in what was the season opening match for both teams.

The Mountain Hawks battled hard against a Temple team that was the preseason pick to win in the Atlantic 10’s eastern division, but the Owls were able to hold off the Brown and White in all three games to earn their first win of the season.

Offensively, the Mountain Hawks were led by junior Michelle Schwendenmann who recorded 10 kills. Sophomore Shannon Spafford and junior Shaina Jordan chipped in with eight kills apiece, but Lehigh hit only .138 on the evening, compared to a .435 hitting percentage for the Owls, who were lead by Zhen Jia Liu’s 14 kills and eight digs. Defensively junior Cassidy Maumus had nine digs for the Mountain Hawks, while DeAngelo added seven of her own.

Action continues on Saturday at the Temple University Classic. Lehigh will take on Rutgers at 10:00 a.m., and then will wrap up play against Towson at 4:30 p.m.
