The Navy win snap’s Lehigh’s eight-game winning streak in the series.
In the first half, Navy was hot from beyond the arc (6-of-11) as the Midshipmen built a 27-19 advantage. However, Lehigh used a 10-0 run to take a 29-27 lead. Down by two in the final seconds of the half, Lehigh senior Chantal St. Laurent came away with a steal – her third of the first half – and Sara Ellis earned a lay-up as time expired to tie the game at 32-32.
Ellis led all first half scorers with 11, while Jessica DePalo added eight. Ashley Pelzek led the Midshipmen in the scoring column with eight first half points.
The second half was more of a see-saw affair, but Navy held on for the win thanks to some clutch shooting from Abi Campbell, who hit four three-point field goals, and Nikki Curtis, who sank four free throws in the game’s final minute.
“We gave them too many open looks and too many second chances,” said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. “They have been playing much better [since the previous meeting between the two teams in January], and we didn’t give the effort we needed to today.”
Jessica DePalo paced Lehigh with 16 points, while Ellis finished with 14, including three three’s. Jenny Callan added 11 points and four rebounds on the afternoon. As a team, the Mountain Hawks shot 45% from the floor.
The Mountain Hawks return to the court on Wednesday, when Lehigh visits American. Game time is set for 7:00 from
