BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With final exams and the holiday break now complete, ninth-ranked Lehigh returns to the mats later this week as the Mountain Hawks head to Greensboro to compete in the third annual Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC-Greensboro, which will take place Thursday and Friday at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. This is the Mountain Hawks first trip to the tournament, which features wrestlers from 31 schools including top ten teams Minnesota and Cornell. Lehigh will send the maximum 15 competitors to the event, but only a select ten will be able to accumulate points towards the team championship.

This is Lehigh’s first trip to the Southern Scuffle, which is now in its third year. Lehigh has generally sent a contingent to the prestigious Midlands Championships at Northwestern, but this year Greg Strobel has decided to field a full squad at this up and coming tournament that features some of the nation’s top teams. Minnesota won the team championship in 2004, while Missouri edged out the Golden Gophers to claim the inaugural Scuffle title in 2003.

The Mountain Hawks have been off since early December when they traveled to Oklahoma, where the Brown and White dropped a 31-6 match at No. 1 Oklahoma State before bouncing back the next night to wrestle No. 4 Oklahoma to an 18-18 tie.

Last year the Golden Gophers of Minnesota won the team, edging runner-up Cornell by a 169-161.5 margin. EIWA foe Navy finished third with 97.5 points. Edinboro’s Shawn Bunch was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler, after defeating Cornell’s Travis Lee in a preview of the 2005 national finals at 133 lbs.

The first three rounds of competition in the championship bracket are slated for Thursday, with quarterfinals, semifinals and the championship round scheduled for Friday. The Championship finals will get underway at 6:30 pm on Friday night.

Action at the third annual Southern Scuffle gets underway on Thursday at 10:00 am from the Greensboro Coliseum. A live webcast of the tournament will be available for a fee through the UNC-Greensboro website at UNCGSpartans.com as well as at www.southernscuffle.com. Fans can purchase the two days of webcast for $9.95 through either of those two sites.
