No. 8 Lehigh set for first EIWA clash against Rutgers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 8 Lehigh welcomes Rutgers to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Sunday afternoon for the Mountain Hawks first EIWA dual of the season. The Mountain Hawks have dominated the EIWA for the last four-plus seasons, winning 22 straight duals and four straight team titles. For the Scarlet Knights, Sunday marks their first dual of the season after opening with a pair of tournaments. Rutgers finished with a 6-8 dual record a year ago and placed eighth at the EIWA Championships.

The first in-season rankings from the NWCA and Intermat were released earlier this week and the Mountain Hawks head into Sunday’s match with seven wrestlers nationally ranked. Sophomore Jeff Santo and Junior Matt Cassidy enter the top 20 in their respective weights based on impressive performances in the Mountain Hawks last dual, a 29-7 win over Arizona State. Santo won by fall in his season debut and comes in ranked 20^th at 133 pounds. Cassidy upset then-No. 10 Ryan Bader and enters the rankings at No. 19.

Lehigh has established itself as the dominant team in the EIWA, with 33 team championships including the last four in a row. The Mountain Hawks have built an impressive winning streak against EIWA foes, winning their last 22 conference duals. The last EIWA school to defeat Lehigh in dual competition was Penn, who did so by a 21-12 score at the Palestra on February 24, 2002.

Rutgers opened the 2005-06 season with a sixth place finish at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Showcase. Last week the Scarlet Knights finished third in the eight team field at the Navy Classic in Annapolis. The Scarlet Knights have two grapplers ranked by Intermat: senior Rudy Medini, who is ranked ninth at 184 and heavyweight Ramel Meekins, who was ranked 12th, but will not join the Scarlet Knights’ wrestling program until football season is over.
