McCoy falls short of Gold medal dream

Athens, Greece - Kerry McCoy’s Gold Medal aspirations came to an abrupt end Friday. After winning his first two bouts this morning he lost 4-1, in overtime to Marid Mutalimov of

Kazakhstan

and failed to advance out of his pool in the 264.5 lb. division (120kg).

Earlier in the day McCoy defeated Italy’s Francesco Miano and Yuri Mildzihov of Kyrgyzstan without allowing a point. Against Mutalimov he overcame a 1-0 deficit to force overtime, but in OT fell victim to a three-point take down and became the first American male eliminated from the freestyle competition. Three of McCoy’s teammates advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes.

McCoy is the only member of the team with previous Olympic experience, finishing fifth in Sydney in 2000.
