Bethlehem, PA – Playing in its first game since the holiday break, Lehigh fought off a pesky Yale team 70-66 Wednesday night, in the second game of the Eighth Annual Christmas City Classic. With the win the Mountain Hawks improve to 7-2 on the season and move into Thursday’s Championship game against Delaware. Yale falls to 1-7

Lehigh started the first half strong, leading by ten early. The Bulldogs went on a run midway through the first 20 minutes, but Lehigh would go on a run of its own to take a 10 point advantage into halftime. The Mountain Hawks continued their strong shooting from the field, shooting 59 percent in the first half, led by 12 points from Jessica DePalo and 10 from reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Sara Ellis.

In the second half, the Lehigh shooting cooled considerably and the Bulldogs were able to hang around. The Mountain Hawks shot just 11 of 28 after the intermission while Yale took advantage of some clutch three-pointers and a strong inside performance by Erica Davis, who finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. A Davis lay-up cut the Lehigh lead to one, but free throws from Ellis and Mary Frances Hynoski iced the win for the Brown and White. The Mountain Hawks were led by 24 points from DePalo and 19 from Ellis.

“We knew they were a better team than their record indicates,” said head coach Sue Troyan after the game. “They played well the whole game and showed what a tough field this tournament has.”

The Mountain Hawks are off to their best start since they started the 1985-86 season with a 10-2 mark. With the win they advanced to tomorrow’s championship game against Delaware. The Blue Hens turned heads with a 67-59 win over Alabama in the evening’s first game.

Thursday’s action at the Christmas City Classic gets underway at 5:00 when Alabama meets Yale in the consolation game. Lehigh will face Delaware for the championship at approximately 7:30. The Lehigh game will be televised locally on Service Electric 2 Sports and will be broadcast on WLVR-FM and online at lehighsports.com. Tickets can be purchased Thursday at the Stabler Arena box office.
