Delaware upends Alabama in Classic opener

Bethlehem, PA – Delaware erased an early 12-point first half deficit as the Fightin’ Blue Hens ralled for a 67-59 victory over Alabama in the opening round of the Christmas City Classic at Lehigh’s Stabler Arena on Wednesday evening.  The victory improves UD’s record to 6-2 on the season, while the Crimson tide drops to 7-3.

 

The Crimson Tide raced out to an early 14-2 lead a behind a trio of three pointers from senior guard Katie Sipe. Delaware started the game shooting just 1 of 16 from the floor. The Fightin’ Blue Hens methodically chipped into the Alabama lead, powered by eight points from Tiara Malcolm and six from Tyresa Smith. Delaware was able to increase its shooting percentage to 31 percent by the half, while Alabama cooled off to shoot 33 percent and take a 25-24 lead into the locker room.

 

Delaware started the second half on a blistering 24-6 run, taking the lead and building it as high as 17 points. The Crimson Tide mounted a late rally, but it wasn’t enough, as the Fightin’ Blue Hens hung on for the win. 

 

Delaware’s Tiara Malcom led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting.  Lauren Hill paced the Crimson Tide with 17 points and nine boards in a losing effort.

 

With the victory, Delaware advances to the championship game on Thursday.  Alabama will play in the consolation game.  Thursday’s game times are pending, based upon the outcome of Wednesday’s Lehigh-Yale contest.
