Lehigh heads to Xavier in a homecoming for Monserez

Bethlehem, PA - Lehigh travels to Cincinnati on Tuesday evening in a battle of 2004 NCAA Tournament teams that have struggled of late as the Mountain Hawks have lost three of their last four games and Xavier has dropped four of its last five.  Lehigh fell to Harvard 67-56 on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, while the Musketeers dropped a tough 80-74 decision to No. 20 Mississippi State on Saturday evening at home.  This will be game two of a four game road swing for the Brown and White, while Xavier will be playing its second of five straight inside of the Cintas Center.  The Mountain Hawks have not won a game on the road since defeating Navy in Annapolis on February 7, 2004, a span of seven games.  In that game, Lehigh held the Midshipmen to just 38 points, the lowest ever by a Mountain Hawk opponent in Patriot League

play.

Lehigh senior captain Nick Monserez hails from Cincinnati and attended Moeller High School where he was honored as the Man of Moeller Award recipient which is given to the athlete that best represents the school in athletics, academics, leadership and service.  Monserez has been hot of late, shooting 47 percent from beyond the arc, 75 percent from the charity stripe and scoring 40 points in Lehigh’s last five games.

Monserez, who will have around 20 family members and friend in attendance, spoke of this opportunity to go back home.  “This is a great experience to be able to play in front of so many friends and family members who have not gotten to see me play.  Outside of my immediate family, most of these people have never seen me play in person, so that will be a neat experience for all of them and for me.”

Head Coach Billy Taylor tries to get each one of his players a so-called “home game” during their careers at Lehigh and is excited about this chance for Monserez.  “This is a great opportunity for Nick to have the chance to play at home in front of his family and friends.  He has played in this city throughout his high school career and now he has a chance to come back home, it’s really all come full circle for him.”

Lehigh and Xavier have never met before, but the Mountain Hawks know that it will be a tough game come Tuesday evening versus the Musketeers.  “We really have to pay close attention to the small things, on both sides of the court” explains Monserez.  “If we can play solid defense, rebound the basketball and execute on offense, we will give ourselves a chance to be in the game.”

Taylor echoes those words of his senior captain.  “We must rebound the basketball well against a taller, more physical front line like Xavier’s.  We also have to take care of the ball on offense, something we have not been doing very well of late and take good shots on our end as well.  Finally, we must try and contain Xavier’s transition game, because they are fast, they are athletic and they will try and run on us.  If we do these things, take good shots, play solid defense and rebound the ball, we’ll be in the game and have a shot.”

Tuesday’s tip is scheduled for 7:30 from the Cintas Center with the game being televised live nationwide on FSN Pittsburgh, as well as DirecTV Channel 628 and on satellite (KU Band AMC 9 – Transponder 17).  Steve Degler and Nathan Jameson will call of the action.  The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1230 AM and 1320 AM in the Lehigh Valley, and around the world on Lehigh’s website, lehisghports.com beginning at 7:00.  Matt Kerr will provide the commentary.
