12/2/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

Lehigh heads to the Garden State on Saturday to grapple with New Jersey schools Rutgers and Rider. The No. 5 Mountain Hawks come in looking to rebound from Sunday’s 23-10 loss at No. 10 Hofstra. Lehigh will face No. 23 Rider in the afternoon, in the Broncs’ first dual meet of the season. At night the Mountain Hawks will visit Rutgers for the Scarlet Knights’ season opener and the first EIWA meeting of the season for both teams.

Rider is the fourth consecutive nationally ranked opponent the Mountain Hawks have faced this season. Lehigh is 2-1 against those opponents. The Broncs cracked the latest Intermat rankings at No. 23 after winning the Keystone Classic and finishing seventh at the Mat Town invitational. Rutgers was picked fourth in the EIWA Preseason Rankings and is led by Senior Andy Roy, a three-time NCAA qualifier who coming into the season was ranked 8th nationally at 174.

The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series with both schools they will wrestle this weekend, including a 33-1 edge over Rutgers. Lehigh is much closer with Rider, with an 8-4 advantage coming into Saturday’s action.  The Mountain Hawks have won seven in a row over the Broncs dating back to 1997. Lehigh has dominated the Scarlet Knights winning 30 in a row, with the lone Rutgers win coming in 1950.

Saturday’s action gets underway with the Rider match at 2:00. Lehigh will then travel to New Brunswick to face Rutgers at 7:00. The Rutgers match can be heard in the Lehigh Valley on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320, with coverage starting at 6:30; as well as online at lehighsports.com.
