Bethlehem, PA – Before a large and enthusiastic crowd at Grace Hall on Friday evening, the Lehigh men’s and women’s basketball teams tipped off their 2004-05 seasons with the first-ever “Midnight Madness.”  ESPN’s Trey Wingo hosted the event that featured the unveiling of the men’s Patriot League Championship banner from last season, highlight videos from both teams, speeches by women’s head coach Sue Troyan and men’s head coach Billy Taylor, a three-point contest, a dunk contest and two scrimmages.

Students were also involved with the madness, as select members of the crowd participated in the Tastykake eating contest, as well as a class lay-up contest and a half court shot.  The crowd was on its feet all evening and into the early morning of Saturday as Lehigh basketball began its season.

The freshman tandem of Erik Smith and Erin Greenberg outlasted seniors Carli Toliver and Nick Monserez in the three-point shootout, while newcomer junior Joe Knight electrified the crowd with three incredible throw downs to win the dunk contest.  Even ESPN’s Wingo got a thrill from watching the 6-1 Knight sky towards the basket for various slams and jams.
