Lehigh rolls over Colgate for first Patriot League win

10/1/2004 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

– Five Mountain Hawks recorded double figure kills Friday night as Lehigh snapped a five match losing streak, beating Colgate 3-1 at the Leeman-Turner Arena. Game scores were 30-28, 22-30, 30-21 and 30-18, as the Mountain Hawks picked up their first Patriot League win of the season and improved to 2-10 on the year, 1-1 in the Patriot League. Colgate fell to 3-9 (0-2).

Game one was a back and forth affair with the Mountain Hawks finally mustering a two-point victory.

After dropping the second game, Lehigh took advantage of a 12-7 spurt midway through game three and cruised to a 30-21 win. The Mountain Hawks put the Raiders away in game four, jumping out to a 8-1 lead and never looking back.

After starting the season 1-10 the Mountain Hawks spent the week looking over film trying to figure out what was going wrong and how to fix it. Turns out they were being over emotional at times, and suffering letdowns at critical moments as a result.

“Tonight we focused more on keeping our energy level, not getting too high or too low,” said coach Amanda Moran, who picked up her first Patriot League win. “They played well as a team tonight, everyone accepted everyone.”

Michelle Schwendenmann led the Mountain Hawks with 17 kills. Shaina Jordan added 13 kills. Jill Raketa chipped in with 12 kills and a team-high 10 digs while Rachel Moquete and Morgan Volkart also hit double digit kills.

The Mountain Hawks return to the court Saturday night, when they host Bucknell at 7:00.
