Bethlehem, PA- Lehigh kicked off its 2002-03 wrestling season with 94th edition of Wrestle-Offs at Grace Hall Tuesday night, in front of 1,107 people. A trio of freshmen, Matt Anderson, David Helfrich, and Troy Letters, scored falls on the evening. Junior Jon Trenge, the nation’s No. 1 rated wrestler at 197, notched a technical fall of his own.
Anderson started the evening off with his fall over sophomore Marvin Rodriguez at 149. The second bout at 149, between sophomores Aaron Kling and Tommy Rohn was one of the most exciting of the evening. Rohn sent the match to extra time when he tied it up with a takedown with just two seconds remaining. But, Kling needed only 10 extra seconds to put Rohn away, scoring a takedown of his own to walk away with a 9-7 decision. Major decisions were scored on the evening by junior heavyweight Joe Sahl and freshmen Matt Ciasulli, 133, and Brian LeMay, 157. Senior Tristan Boyd, 141, and freshmen Taylor Graham, 125, Derek Zinck,157, and Travis Frick, 184, won decisions in their bouts.
"A lot of our guys were impressive," head coach Greg Strobel observed. "The Kling-Rohn match was very hard fought. Rohn has been battling illness, but he hung in there. From a technical standpoint, the match between Frick and Cassidy was tremendous. Both of those guys were very strong."
The Mountain Hawks will hit the mats again on Friday, November 22 when they host Michigan at 7:00. The match will be the last in the original Grace Hall for Lehigh, as the venue will be undergoing renovations. Tickets for the match can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME.
