Lehigh falls in criteria decision

Lehigh was eliminated from the 2002 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals by Arizona State in a rare 21-21criteria decision. Arizona State’s Kellan Fluckinger scored a fall over Lehigh’s Joe Sahl to tie the score at 21 in the final bout. At that point the top criteria was 6-point decisions. Arizona had earned one fall for six points, however Lehigh’s Tristan Boyd had a win by forfeit also worth six points. The top criteria then moved to five point technical falls. The only technical fall of the match belonged to Arizona State, thus giving them the win.
Lehigh was forced to use three back up wrestlers while their starters were nursing injuries. Troy Minarovic wrestled at 149 for an injured Mike Pirozzola. Pirozzola damaged his ribs in the first dual against Oklahoma. Ted Dufresne wrestled for Chris Vitale who is nursing an injured knee. Joe Sahl replaced starter Shawn Laughlin, who suffered a bloody nose against Oklahoma.
At 125, 20th ranked Mario Stuart lost his second in a row, dropping an 18-9 major decision to Arizona State’s tenth ranked Mike Simpson. Fifth ranked David Douglas recorded a 4-0 decision over Lehigh’s Dan Hyman at 133, to put the Sun Devils up 7-0.
At 141 Lehigh’s Tristan Boyd put the first points on the board for Lehigh. Boyd earned a win by forfeit to give the Brown and White six. At 149 Troy Minarovic dropped a 6-0 decision to Quinn Foster of Arizona State. Warren Stout rebounded well from his loss against Oklahoma. At 157, Stout recorded an impressive 18-7 major decision over Danny Alcocer to tie the score at ten. Arizona’s 19th ranked Nick Frost earned the only technical fall of the match. Frost earned a 19-3 technical fall over Lehigh’s Ted Dufresne at165. At 174, Brad Dillon earned his second win of the day tabbing 13-4 major decision over Chris Petrie. Tenth ranked Rob Rohn also tabbed a major decision for the Mountain Hawks. At 184, Rohn scored a 14-4 major decision over the Sun Devils’ Will Carr to give Lehigh its first lead of the match. At 197, second ranked Jon Trenge defeated tenth ranked Erik Gladish in a 6-4-overtime bout. This is the first time Trenge has one a bout without a single takedown. In the heavyweight bout Arizona’s ninth ranked Kellan Fluckinger recorded the only pin of the match over Joe Sahl to tie the score at 21and force the criteria decision.
Lehigh now 6-5, will return to Grace Hall Friday January 25th to face off against Navy. That dual is scheduled to begin at 7:00.
