Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh defeated archrival Lafayette by a score of 1-0 on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex to give the Mountain Hawks their first Patriot League victory of the season. The win puts Lehigh at 5-2 on the season, 1-0 in the Patriot League and drops the Leopards to 2-4-3 overall, 0-1 in the League.
Junior Jocelyn Helwig scored the game’s only goal off of a beautiful cross pass from freshman Lauren Calabrese. It was Helwig’s fourth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead. With the assist, Calabrese now has 12 points on the season, which is tops on the squad.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz went the distance in goal, playing all 90:00 minutes and spearheaded the Mountain Hawk defense with four saves along the way. Iwaskiewicz even came out of goal on several opportunities to prevent possible Leopard scoring opportunities. The Lehigh defense appeared to be tired at the end, but endured to the end and picked up the win over rival Lafayette.
Head coach Manny Oudin was happy to get the win, but though his Mountain Hawks could have played better. "This was a good win for us, but not a great performance. It was important for us to play well at home and to get a Patriot League victory and we did both of those tonight." Oudin adds, "I think the girls got a little carried away in the moment of Lehigh-Lafayette, but we came away with the win, and can build on this."
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to New York to take on Army. Game time is set for 7:00 and can be heard live on Lehigh’s website.
