Lehigh comes up short at Valparaiso

9/16/2003 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Valparaiso, IN – Valparaiso used a 20-4 run to close out the game as the Crusaders defeated Lehigh by a 68-54 score at the Athletics-Recreation Center on Sunday afternoon. The setback drops the Mountain Hawks’ record to 1-7, while Valpo improves to 6-5.

The game was a see-saw affair, with seven ties and eight lead changes. The Crusaders held a slim 32-29 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the two teams again traded baskets and defensive stops, and a couple of Jana Ransom free throws gave the Mountain Hawks a 50-48 edge with 6:25 remaining. Ransom finished the day with 10 points, sinking eight of ten attempts from the line. However, the Crusaders took advantage of some late Lehigh miscues and rolled to the deceptive 14-point victory.

Anne Tierney recorded her second double-double of the season to lead Lehigh with 11 points and 11 boards. Cat Nicholson finished with ten points for Lehigh, who shot 40% for the game. Suzie Hammel was one of three Crusaders in double figures, leading all scorers with 15. Jenna Stangler scored 14, and Katie Boone added 11 for Valparaiso.

Lehigh returns to action on January 2, when the Mountain Hawks visit St. Francis (New York). Game time is set for 7:00, and the game will be played at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn.
