West Point, NY – Junior Anne Tierney exploded for 16 second half points to propel Lehigh past Army 67-58 on Wednesday evening at Christl Arena in the league opener for both teams. The win improved Lehigh to 5-9 overall and dropped the Black Knights to 5-9 overall.

The teams went to the locker rooms tied at 30 at the half but Lehigh came out of the gates running, scoring points in transition, crashing the boards, and forcing turnovers. The Mountain Hawks forced 23 Army turnovers on the night and shot a blistering 60% from behind the three-point arc. Lehigh opened the second half with an 18-8 and held a ten point lead for most of the half. Army crept within four with just over nine minutes to go, but the Mountain Hawks quickly recovered and extended their lead back to 10.

Tierney recorded her 35th career double-double finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds after scoring just two points and recording six rebounds in the first half. The junior center is now just 40 rebounds away from becoming Lehigh’s all-time leading rebounder. Jen Siemaszko currently holds the record with 788 in her career.

Sophomore Carli Toliver scored 16 points, two short of a career high, shooting 6-10 from the floor. Toliver drained a career high four three pointers and recorded three steals on the night. Freshman Chantel St. Laurent chipped in six points and two assists.

Christine Gassman scored a game-high 19 points for the Black Knights. Gassman shot 6-of-12 from the field including 5-of-7 from behind the three-point line. Katie Macfarlane scored 18 points and pulled down six rebounds in the losing effort.

With the win, Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan became the school’s all-time winningest coach with 89 career wins. Troyan, now 89-96 in her career, passed Muffet McGraw who is now the head coach at Notre Dame. McGraw posted an 88-41 record in her four years at Lehigh.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday evening at Stabler Arena when it plays host to Colgate in the first game of a Patriot League doubleheader beginning at 5:30.
