Mountain Hawks shine in Patriot League opener

Annapolis, MD – Lehigh won its 50th all time Patriot League contest Saturday and handed Navy head coach Don DeVoe his fourth ever loss vs. Mountain Hawks, defeating Navy 76-59. With the win Lehigh improves to 9-5 overall, 1-0 in Patriot League play, while Navy falls to 4-10 overall, 0-1 in Patriot League play. The win is also the fist time in two years that the Mountain Hawks have opened league play 1-0. Lehigh took a 39-33 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Mountain Hawks were led by their seniors, including Zlatko Savovic. Savovic managed 12 first half points, while teammate Matt Logie posted nine points, including a three point shot, the 231st of his career. Mike Cowgill and Matt Crawford each managed three rebounds. Cowgill also tallied a first half team high three assists, with Crawford managing the first half’s only blocked shot. Lehigh shot 12-of-19 from the floor for a 63% shooting percentage. For Navy, Francis Ebong and Scott Long each tallied eight points. Long led in assists, while no Navy player was able to tally a block in the first half. The Midshipmen shot 48% from the floor, 14% from three-point land, and 61% from the free throw line. In the second half, Lehigh scored the first points, a lay-up by Crawford at the 19:20 mark. The Mountain Hawks continued to lead throughout the second half, eventually outlasting Navy for the win. "I thought we did a tremendous job today," said head coach Billy Taylor. "Our seniors really came in and set the tone and got us going." Savovic finished as the high scorer, posting 19 points. Logie managed 16 points, while Crawford, and Mike Cowgill managed double figures as well, posting 14 and 11 points respectively. As a team Lehigh shot 57% from the floor, going 24-of-42. Free throw shooting was also key for Lehigh. The team managed 92%, making 24-of-26 shots. Navy was paced by Scott Long. Long ended the game with 14 points, four assists, and one steal. Ebong also broke into the double-digit column. Ebong was 4-of-6 from the floor for 12 points. He also managed Navy’s only block. Navy shot only 36% from the floor, including a 25% output in the second half. The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday at 8:15 at Bucknell.
