Navy outlasts Mountain Hawks

Bethlehem, PA – Navy hung on down the stretch and hit several key free throws as the Midshipmen defeated the Mountain Hawks by a score of 66-61 in front of a crowd of 2,136 at Stabler Arena on Saturday. The loss was Lehigh’s eighth straight, dropping the Mountain Hawks to 4-19 on the season, and 1-9 in Patriot League play. Meanwhile, Navy improves to 10-15 overall, and 5-5 in the league.
     

The first half saw the two teams battle back & forth, as neither team was able to gain strong control. Navy built a five point lead at 15-10 with 10:47 remaining in the first half, when Mitch Moore scored off a pass from Scott Long. Lehigh battled back with an 11-0 run over a stretch of 3 minutes, 42 seconds to build a 21-15 lead on a Matt Logie fast break bucket. Logie later drained a three with just 42 seconds left in the half to send the Mountain Hawks into the locker room with a 31-25 lead. Lehigh scored 16 of its 31 first half points inside the paint. Logie led the way for Lehigh with 11 first half points.
     

Early in the second half, Navy came out strong, while Lehigh struggled to find the basket. The Mids opened the half with a 13-2 run to build a 39-33 lead five minutes into the half. Lehigh rallied to tie the game, and a pair of Logie free throws gave the Mountain Hawks a 49-48 lead at the 6:32 mark. Navy broke a 56-56 tie on a Kwame Ofori basket with 1:19 to play, and was able to hold on for the win. The Midshipmen controlled the glass, out-rebounding Lehigh by a 39-30 margin.
     

Logie led all scorers with 22 points on 6-of-14 shooting, and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Bobby Mbom added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench for Lehigh. Sophomore point guard Ra Tiah added four assists and three blocked shots. Navy was paced by Mitch Moore’s 20 points. Jason Jeanpierre added 18 points and six rebounds in the win. Scott Long crashed the boards hard, pulling down 11 rebounds on the night.
     

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday night, when the Mountain Hawks travel to Worcester, Massachusetts to square off with the Crusaders of Holy Cross. Tip-off is at 7:00.
