Bethlehem, PA – Eight member of the Lehigh field hockey team have been named to the 2002 National Academic Squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. In order to qualify for the team, players must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 and be a starter or key reserve on her team.
Four sophomores and four freshmen make up the Lehigh contingent on the national squad. Freshmen Chelsea Singer, Melissa Fricke, Amy Whipple, and Meghan Gove followed the lead of sophomore teammates Jeanine Hoff, Liz Towne, Sheila Clabby, and Christina Getz in the classroom.
Hoff, a goalkeeper, is a mathematics major with a 3.75 GPA. She started eight games in goal for the Mountain Hawks. She led the team with 73 saves and her 1.86 goals against average would have rated fourth in the Patriot League and her 8.11 saves per games would have ranked third, had she qualified. Splitting time in goal with Hoff was Gove, an Arts & Sciences major with a 3.4 GPA. Gove played in 11 games, with a 2.15 GAA.
Clabby tallied a 3.69 GPA in psychology while appearing in 15 games with eight starts at forward. The sophomore scored one goal and had one assist. Towne appeared in eight games, with five starts as a midfielder. She has a 3.70 GPA in biology. Getz, who saw action in six games, has studied her way to a 3.57 as a finance major.
A freshman, Fricke scored the game-winning goal in a win over UMBC. The Arts & Sciences major has a 3.55 GPA. Singer saw action in 10 games in her first season and has a 3.75 in computer science. Whipple, who has a 3.44 in business, rounds out the Lehigh contingent of the NFHCA Academic Squad.
The Mountain Hawks finished their season 4-13 overall and 0-6 in Patriot League play.
