Balanced effort gives Lehigh its first win

Princeton, NJ – Sophomore Dawn Gorynski scored 13 points, dished out three assists, and came away with two steals as the Mountain Hawks picked up their first win of the season – a 56-53 victory over Princeton at Jadwin Gym on Wednesday night.

After a quick three point bucket to start the game gave the Tigers an early advantage, the Mountain Hawks rallied and grabbed a four point lead they would hold for much of the first half.  Princeton (1-3) hung tough, and took a 28-27 advantage into the locker room.

In the second half, Lehigh (1-4) remained determined, and built a seven point lead on a Jana Ransom bucket with 10:50 to play.  From that point, Lehigh never trailed.  The Mountain Hawks hung on, and came away with the three point victory thanks in part to solid defense down the stretch from junior Chantal St. Laurent, who had a key steal and layup late in the half.

In addition to Gorynski’s 13 points, both Jana Ransom and Jessica DePalo chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds in the win.  Ransom, in making her first start of the season, knocked down a three-point field goal and was 5-of-12 from the floor in 26 minutes of action.  Freshman guard Sara Ellis had a career high seven points for Lehigh as well.

Overall, Lehigh shot 39% from the floor on the night.  The Mountain Hawks forced 17 Tigers turnovers, as Lehigh recorded six steals in the win.

The Mountain Hawks look to make it two in a row Saturday, as Lehigh returns to Stabler Arena to host St. Joseph’s.  Game time is set for 5:30, with live coverage on Service Electric TV and WLVR-FM.
