Princeton, NJ – Lehigh quarterback Chad Schwenk threw a career-high four touchdown passes and tight end Adam Bergen caught 12 passes for 173 yards as the No. 20 Mountain Hawks rolled past Princeton by a 28-13 score in front of 15,205 fans at Princeton Stadium on Saturday night. The win – Lehigh’s seventh straight over the Tigers – improves the Mountain Hawks’ record to 3-0 (2-0 Patriot League), while the setback drops Princeton to 0-1 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks got the scoring started early, taking the opening drive 69 yards for the game’s first score. Senior tailback Jermaine Pugh caught a 19 yard pass from Schwenk to give Lehigh the touchdown advantage just 4:44 into the contest. Lehigh added another score six minutes later when Schwenk connected with Bergen for a 25-yard touchdown pass to give the Mountain Hawks a 14 point lead in the opening stanza. Neither team could find the end zone in the second quarter, and the Mountain Hawks took a 14-0 advantage into the lockerroom.
In the third quarter, Lehigh put the game out of reach with two more scores. Schwenk capped an 80-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Adam Kovacs. Just over five minutes later, Schwenk found Pugh for 10-yards and a score to give the Mountain Hawks a 28-0 lead through three.
Princeton finally broke through in the fourth quarter, as quarterback Matt Verbit connected with B.J. Szymanski on a 75-yard touchdown pass, putting the Tigers on the board. Verbit later connected with Blair Morrison on a 19-yard pass, cutting the Lehigh lead to 15 points at 28-13.
