BALTIMORE – The 2024 season began for Lehigh volleyball on Friday night from Hill Field House in Baltimore against the Morgan State Bears. The Mountain Hawks earned a four-set victory over the Bears to kick off the 2024 campaign.
"Once we got the jitters out in those first few points, we stepped up and executed on several different levels," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "It was fun to be back on the court competing."
The first set of the season was fairly even between Lehigh and Morgan State, with the teams tied 16-16 through the first two thirds of the frame. However, the Mountain Hawks rode a 9-3 run from this point forward to claim a 25-19 win in set one. Lehigh again earned an impressive win in the second set, besting the Bears 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
However, after being tied 22-22 in the third, Morgan State pulled away to narrowly edge Lehigh in set number three. Despite their late comeback effort, a dominant 25-15 fourth set victory propelled the Mountain Hawks to a win in their opening match of the 2024 season.
Junior Natalie Luscomb led the way for the Mountain Hawks with 16 kills on an impressive .609 hitting percentage in what was her first match played since last year's season opener. Senior Megan Schulte was close behind, tallying 15 kills of her own. Senior Kyleigh Brown led the Lehigh with 20 digs while senior Makena Smith dished out 31 assists on the night.
"Natalie played extremely well," said Keckler. "She's been working hard on her game on both the offensive and defensive side. It was so great to see her step on the court and shine."
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Towson University. Lehigh will take on Saint Francis (Pa.) at 10 a.m. and then battle the hosting Tigers at 6 p.m.
"Both matchups tomorrow will produce different challenges and it will be great for our team to get the opportunity to see how we learn and compete," said Keckler.
