Mountain Hawks Defeat Merrimack to Pick Up Second-Straight Win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Three first-half goals were just enough to give the Mountain Hawks their second consecutive win as they defeated Merrimack 3-1 at Ulrich Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lehigh field hockey team won its second straight game to improve to 4-5 on the year while Merrimack falls to 0-8.
Junior Lotte Smorenburg gave Lehigh the early lead, scoring her first goal of the season in the first three minutes of play. Following Smorenburg's goal, the Mountain Hawks continued to bring the offensive intensity, taking six corners in the first quarter alone.
Within the first three minutes of the second quarter, Lehigh took its seventh corner of the half. Senior Sydney White extended the Mountain Hawks' lead to 2-0 with a goal assisted by senior Sarah Bonthuis and first-year Kiki Mes.
Just ten minutes later, Merrimack responded with a goal of its own from Julie Wester. With Lehigh leading 2-1, the Mountain Hawks continued to bring the offensive intensity to close out the first half.
First-year Zoe Day scored her first goal of the season with three seconds left in the first half. Day's goal was the final goal of the day for either side and was assisted by sophomore Eleni Kountroubis.
Throughout the second half, Lehigh continued to bring the offensive pressure but the Merrimack defense showed no signs of letting up. The Mountain Hawks outshot Merrimack 24-5. Lehigh also led 14-2 in penalty corners.
Senior Maddie Kahn picked up three saves in goal for Lehigh while Merrimack goalkeeper Paige DeGeorge finished with ten.
Lehigh will return to Ulrich Field to host LIU tomorrow at 12 p.m. Following Sunday's matchup, the Mountain Hawks will continue league play and head to rival Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m.
