Mountain Hawks Earn Senior Day Shutout Victory Over Colgate

10/29/2022 2:58:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa.– The Lehigh field hockey program recorded their second straight shutout, and third of the season, with a 5-0 win versus Colgate in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks celebrated Senior Day.

Lehigh improves to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Patriot League competition, reaching the same number of total victories and conference wins the program earned a season ago. This is the first time since 1985-86 that the program has reached double-digit wins in back-to-back years. Colgate concludes their season with a record of 3-15 and a league mark of 0-6.

"I am really happy with how we finished out the second half," stated head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We were really slow in the first half and we didn't play with the amount of urgency I felt we needed to coming into this match."

Prior to the start of today's match Lehigh honored their seven graduating seniors with their families. After that, the Mountain Hawks did not need to much time to take a lead. Three minutes into the first period, junior Lotte Smorenburg, who inserted on the first penalty corner of the match, tapped in a pass from senior Sydney White to give Lehigh a 1-0 advantage.

The Mountain Hawks attempted three more shots in the first period, but none were able to find the back of the net. The Raiders took control of the second period and held Lehigh without a single shot, and Colgate took three shots with two going on goal, but senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn saved both. The Raiders and Mountain Hawks would head into halftime with Lehigh leading 1-0.

A strong third period allowed Lehigh to pull away from the Raiders, starting with a goal from sophomore Guusje Hogendoorn that was assisted by first-year Kiki Mes just over a minute into the period. Five minutes later, the Mountain Hawks extended their lead to 3-0 when first year Maddie Kandra beat the Colgate goalkeeper off a pass from Mes for her second assist of the day. Lehigh tacked on one more goal in the third when Hogendoorn contributed her second goal of the match off a penalty corner that was assisted by Smorenburg and White to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth period.

Lehigh would score its fifth and final goal of the contest with about seven minutes to play when Kandra registered her second goal of the afternoon off a record-breaking assist from senior Sarah Bonthuis to give the Mountain Hawks a 5-0 advantage.

"We needed to adjust our mindset coming into the second half to be able to perform the way we needed to," continued Dallmeyer. "We are fortunate to have great leadership on the field and our team responded well to rising to the level we are expected to play at and I appreciate that."

Both Kandra and Hogendoorn scored twice in the win, with Kandra's season total to growing to six and Hogendoorn now with three markers this year. Smorenburg's goal was also her third of the season and added her second assist. Mes registered two assists to push her total to five while White's two assists were her first assists of the year.

Bonthuis' lone assist that came on Kandra's second goal broke Lehigh's single-season record for assists in a season, recording her tenth of the year. Bonthuis has now passed recent alum, Lenke Havas, who recorded nine assists in her first year in 2018.

Defensively, Kahn recorded three saves to record her second straight shutout, third of the season, and the ninth blank slate of her career. The Lehigh defense held Colgate without a single penalty corner in the second half and allowed only two in the match. The Mountain Hawks also limited the Raiders to just four total shots with three going on goal, while Lehigh attempted 14 total shots, with 10 going on cage, and earned eight penalty corners.

Dallmeyer concluded, "It's a great group of people to work with and I couldn't be happier to come away with a win for this group on Senior Day."

Lehigh remains in Bethlehem for its final match of the regular season as the Mountain Hawks conclude their schedule with a non-league contest against Columbia at 1 p.m.
