BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks completed the season sweep over rival Lafayette with a 3-0 victory in Easton on Saturday evening and has claimed the season sweep over the Leopards seven times in the last eight seasons. Lehigh is now 16-10 overall, 7-5 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette falls to 5-19 overall and 2-9 in league play.
The Mountain Hawks out-scored Lafayette 62-34 on the night, their highest margin in league play this season. Ana Spangenberg was the only player to reach double-figures with her match-leading 18 kills. The sophomore capped the week with 39 kills in two matches.
Sabrina Lancaster nearly had a double-double as posted eight kills to go along with her match-high 11 digs. Lauren Bright led all players with five kills and Megan Polak posted a match-high 35 assists.
The Mountain Hawks scored a dominant 25-14 victory in the first set. LU broke out to an 11-5 lead with six kills and capitalized on the Lafayette attack errors. Lehigh never broke strike and ended the set on a 9-2 run.
The second set played out much differently than the first with Lafayette forcing Lehigh to play catchup as the Leopards set the pace from the beginning. Lafayette took an 11-8 lead, but Lehigh regained some ground and took a 16-15 lead and forced a Lafayette timeout. As the points reached 25, the set became tighter. Lafayette took a 24-23 lead, but a kill by Lancaster knotted the set at 24-24. Lafayette had set point opportunities three more times, but could not close the deal. Tied 28-28, a Lafayette attack error set up Julia Pressly for the set-deciding kill and gave Lehigh the 30-28 win.
Lehigh put Lafayette in an early 7-1 deficit to start the third set, led by three Spangenberg kills. The Leopards cut the deficit to 11-8 as the errors piled up for Lehigh, which then led to a 13-13 tie. Lafayette led as late as 19-18, but then Lehigh began to compile the kills and ultimately sealed the match on back-to-back service aces by Polak.
The Mountain Hawks return to the court Friday with a road trip to Loyola before returning home to face American on Saturday at 5 p.m.
