Ice Hockey Team Loses in Overtime to Cornell

10/21/2017 1:16:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey (ACHA D1)

The Lehigh Ice Hockey team traveled to Cortland, NY to play games against Cornell University and SUNY Cortland.  The Mountain Hawks struck first when Keith Calvaruso picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated into a 2 on 1 with Jason Langevin.  Calvaruso drew the sole defender to himself before sliding a perfect pass to Langevin who roofed the puck into the net for the first goal.  Jake Levine got the second assist.

After a Lehigh turnover, Cornell tied the score by getting the puck bye goaltender Sean McGowan.  With the game tied 1-1, the Calvaruso line struck again as Langevin won a battle for the puck in the corner and slid a pass to Calvaruso in front of the net and Keith easily beat the Cornell goalie to make the score 2-1.

In the second period, Lehigh scored again when Ryder Griffith shot the puck form the side boards and it floated over the shoulder of the Cornell goalie and into the net, to give Lehigh a 3-1 lead.  Levine assisted.  On the same shift, Griffith won the face off to Langevin at the left circle and Langevin waisted a puck that the Cornell goalie didn't see to extend the lead to 4-1.  Cornell closed the gap soon after and the teams went into the locker room with Lehigh leading 4-2.

Lehigh set out to protect the lead in the third period and successfully met their goal until the 16 minute mark when a Lehigh defender was called for a check from behind.  The NY referee insisted the penalty created an automatic 5 minute major and a game misconduct.  There was no injury on the play and the check wasn't an intent to injure.  A boarding call would have been appropriate but the referee's decision would turn the course of the game.  Battling a short handed situation with 4 defensemen, Lehigh surrendered 2 goals during the 5 minutes and was called for an additional penalty at the end of the major penalty.

With game tied 4-4, Lehigh lost the momentum and battled hard to regain the lead.  Mcgowan made a critical save on a break away to keep the game tied.  The period ended with the game tied and headed into overtime.  Early in the extra period, Cornell scored to win the game 5-4.

Lehigh played a great game but couldn't come away with the win.  The team gets right back on the ice to play Cortland.
