BALTIMORE, Md. – The Patriot League leading Lehigh volleyball team is off to an undefeated start in its first week of conference play following a 3-0 sweep at Loyola on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks are 7-9 overall, with a 3-0 record in the Patriot League and are currently riding a three-match winning streak. The Greyhounds fall to 3-10 overall, with a PL record of 0-2 and are on a seven-match losing streak.
Lehigh also started 3-0 in its first week of Patriot League play back in 2014 and went on to win its first six PL matches that season. The Mountain Hawks also extend their winning streak to 11-straight matches against Loyola and are 13-3 in the all-time series dating back to 1985.
Lehigh used a balanced scoring attack in today's match as Emily Poole and Jessica Donaldson each recorded nine kills to lead the team. Tori Hemsath contributed eight kills and Julia Pressly got involved in the scoring with seven kills. Lauren Bright recorded five kills and a hitting percentage of .667, while Poole, Donaldson and Pressly each hit over .300 on the day.
The Mountain Hawks recorded a team hitting percentage of .279 on the day. They have hit over .200 in all three matches this week after achieving that mark in just one other match this season.
Megan Polak had another stellar performance as the team's assist leader as she recorded 31 in today's contest. Polak has averaged 35 assists in the three matches this week. She also contributed eight digs in today's performance.
On the defensive front, Emily Develle led the team with 15 digs. The Mountain Hawks continued their successful net presence with seven total blocks on the day, led by Hemsath who had four.
Despite recording a sweep, Lehigh had to earn each set victory today. The Mountain Hawks never led by more than five points at any point on the day as they were held in check by Loyola throughout the match. Lehigh either trailed or was tied late in both the second and third sets, but showed great poise in closing out both sets to capture the match sweep.
Lehigh will look to extend its longest win streak of the season and keep the unblemished PL record in place in a home match against Bucknell on Friday night. Start time from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall is slated for 7 p.m.
