Sprinters lead Lehigh women's effort Saturday at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh's corps of sprinters led the way for the Mountain Hawks Saturday at Bucknell. Sophomore Kaitlyn Ruffing led Lehigh sweeps in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. The Mountain Hawks also won the 200 free and the 400 free relay but it was the host Bison who came away with a 163-131 win at Kinney Natatorium. Lehigh won six events against the Bison but despite a strong overall showing fall to 5-4 on the dual season.
Ruffing won the 50 free in 23.75 with junior Carolyn Koch and freshman Meghan Thompson finishing second and third in the event. In the 100 free, Ruffing touched the wall in 51.92 with Carolyn Koch and freshman Julianne Koch taking second and third.
Julianne Koch posted Lehigh's first win of the day with a win in the 200 yard freestyle in 1:53.47.
Junior Courtney Patterson also won two events on Saturday, taking the 500 yard freestyle in 5:07.38 and the 200 yard individual medley in 2:07.73.
Lehigh's last win came in the 400 free relay as Julianne Koch, Thompson, sophomore Cora Summerfield and Ruffing won the event in 3:35.26.
Despite only six event wins and no competitors in diving, the Mountain Hawks remained close thanks to 2-3-4 finishes in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events. Senior Mary Caitlin Samuels, sophomore Kelly Carroll and freshman Sydney Bornstein provided the points in both events with Bornstein taking second in the 200 and Carroll earning runner-up honors in the 100.
Senior Alissa Leung contributed second place finishes in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events.
Next up for the Mountain Hawks is a trip to Princeton on Sunday for an unscored meet that will begin at 10 a.m. Lehigh returns home to host Drexel next Saturday in the regular season finale before preparing for a return to Lewisburg for the Patriot League Championships, February 18-21.
