Patriot League Women's Basketball Awards – 11/11/13
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's basketball freshman Kayla Burton has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. The Newton, Mass. native had a stellar performance on Friday night to help Lehigh to a 93-73 win at Niagara.
A 5-8 guard, Burton stepped up in her first collegiate game to tally 11 points and four assists in just 19 minutes of action. She shot 4-for-7 from field goal range and 3-for-5 from three point range to help lift the Mountain Hawks past the Purple Eagles. Her defense was also impressive, as the freshman pulled down three rebounds and recorded one steal.
Lehigh's 93 points in Friday's game were the most scored in 23 years, with the last 93-point effort coming over Bucknell on Jan. 13, 1990. The win gave the Mountain Hawks their first season-opening victory since Lehigh beat Lipscomb to open the 2009-10.
Sophomore Kerry Kinek also garnered honorable mention recognition for her performance at Niagara. Kinek scored 21 points in 24 minutes, just one point shy of tying her career high of 22. She also grabbed nine rebounds and shot nine of 14.
Burton, Kinek and the Mountain Hawks return to action tonight (Monday) against NJIT in Stabler Arena. The home opener is set to begin at 7 p.m. and can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network.
