BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh junior guard C.J. McCollum earned Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday following a strong week which featured 35 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and six steals over two Mountain Hawk victories. The award marks McCollum's first of the season after breaking the Patriot League record with six Player of the Week honors last year.
McCollum continued his strong all-around play to lead Lehigh to a dominating win over Saint Francis (Pa.), then a thrilling last-second victory at Wagner. For the week, the Canton, Ohio native shot an efficient 52 percent from the field, 67 percent from three-point range and 71 percent from the free throw line. He began on Wednesday by scoring 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds in a 71-50 victory over the Red Flash. That came in a career-low 19 minutes as the Mountain Hawks opened a 42-point, 68-26, lead midway through the second half.
On Saturday at Wagner, McCollum's 16 first-half points kept Lehigh close in the early going. The Mountain Hawks stormed back from down 11 with 6:51 to play, staging a 14-0 run to take a three-point advantage on their way to a 70-69 victory. McCollum finished with a team high in points (22), rebounds (6), assists (5) and steals (3) as Lehigh won its first game by single digits all season. This came against a strong Wagner squad who entered with a 7-2 record and undefeated at home.
With his 35 points for the week, McCollum moved into 20th place in Patriot League history and eighth in Lehigh history with 1,527 career points. His 22 points at Wagner moved him past former teammate Marquis Hall and former coach Matt Logie. For the season, McCollum is averaging 19.9 points (second in the Patriot League), 5.5 rebounds (seventh), 3.2 assists (sixth) and 2.5 steals (first).
The Mountain Hawks return home to host Arcadia on Monday at 7 p.m. Following a 10-day layoff, they return to game action on Thursday, Dec. 22 when they travel to Michigan State to face the Spartans. That game will tip at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. Tickets for all home games are now on sale and may be purchased on Lehighsports.com or by calling the ticket office at (610) 7LU-GAME.
