WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh's swimming and diving teams opened the 2011-12 season by sweeping a dual meet from Holy Cross Sunday at the Hart Center Pool. The Mountain Hawk men prevailed 155-80 while the women downed the Crusaders by a 130-104 score.
“It was a good day,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “Our freshmen really stepped up and showed how bright this season could be. The upperclassmen showed that they had the ability to exhibit some force in the Patriot League.”
On the women's side, Lehigh won seven of the first nine events, including six events where the Mountain Hawks swept the top three spots. With the meet already clinched, Lehigh's times in the final three swimming events did not count in the team scores.
Simon also won a pair of individual events, taking the 50 free in 26.02 seconds and the 100 free in 1:00.16. Barletta led a Lehigh sweep in the 200 free, winning in a time of 1:58.97.
Freshman Mary Samuels was also a winner for the Mountain Hawks, taking the 100 fly in 55.68 to lead a Lehigh sweep. Lehigh swimmers also posted the top times in the 500 free, 100 breast and 200 free relay but their scores did not count towards the team total.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Friday, October 21 when they travel to West Chester to face the Golden Rams at 6 p.m.
