PHILADELPHIA Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team got right back to its winning ways Tuesday night as it defeated the La Salle Explorers 3-1. After the Mountain Hawks won three matches in a row last week they were looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Niagara Saturday afternoon. Lehigh did it in impressive fashion taking the first two sets and the fourth to beat La Salle. The Mountain Hawks were able to show off their depth and get everyone some playing time during the match.
“We were able to utilize everyone tonight,” Maurer said. “It gave us a great opportunity to see what everybody was made of.”
The Mountain Hawks built an early lead in the first set and never looked back winning with a score of 25-18. La Salle battled back in the second set pushing the Mountain Hawks to the limit and they responded. After taking a 24-22 lead the Explorers squandered the opportunity and Lehigh scored four consecutive points to close out the set.
“With the set on the line we came from behind and finished,” Maurer said.
The Explorers took the third set 25-17, but Lehigh rallied and finished off the match with a strong 25-15 win.
With normal libero Emma Melendez out of the line up, sophomore Jessica Kurdika stepped in and did a great job defensively for the Mountain Hawks. Kudirka had a team-high 25 digs and also contributed three service aces.
“Jess had to step in as the libero and she did a phenomenal job,” Maurer said. “It was a seamless move and she made a lot of big plays.”
Sophomore Angelika Kopacz contributed 10 kills while junior setter Brittany Dickinson had another big night with 35 assists.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday when they stay on the road to compete in the Columbia Tournament in New York City. Lehigh will start things off with a match against Fairleigh Dickinson at 5 p.m.
