LEWISBURG, Pa. – After two school records fell on day one of the 2009 Patriot League swimming and diving championships, Lehigh swimmers smashed five more school marks on the second day of competition, Friday at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium. With one day of competition remaining, Lehigh’s men sit in fourth place with 250 points, while the women currently sit in sixth with 178.5.
One day after setting a new school mark in the 50 yard freestyle, senior Dan Johnson set a new school record in the 200 free. Johnson initially broke the record in the prelims with a time of 1:38.22 and then broke it again in the finals with a time of 1:37.39. Last year’s 200 free champion, Johnson was unable to repeat however as his finals time left him in third place.
Junior Kevin McGrath reached the finals in the 100 breast, placing fifth with a time of 57.55 and also won the B-final in the 400 IM to place ninth with a school-record time of 4:03.37.
The third school record on the men’s side was set by freshman Angelo DiGiacinto placed fourth in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 49.15. DiGiacinto set his school record in the preliminaries with a time of 49.02 seconds. DiGiacinto also placed 11th in the 100 back, three spots behind sophomore Billy Dunne.
Both of Lehigh’s men’s relay teams placed fourth in Friday night’s two relay events: the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay.
On the women’s side, both Mountain Hawk relay squads put together school record swims. In the 200 medley relay freshman Lauren Armstrong, senior Melanie Rolish, junior Allison Rolish and sophomore Allison Montanye placed fourth with a record time of 1:46.73. Lehigh also produced a school record in the 800 free relay, with freshman Priscilla Barletta, Paola Simon and sophomores Lauren Kindrick and Kristen Keenan registering a time of 7:38.87.
In other women’s action, Melanie Rolish won the B-final in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.82, while junior Stephanie Naylor took 13th in the same event. Allison Rolish finished tenth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:33.99. Junior Erin Tormey placed seventh in the women’s one meter dive with a score of 212.10 points.
