Mountain Hawks split a pair at Patriot Invite

FAIRFAX, Va. – Lehigh played two matches on Saturday at the Patriot Invitational on the campus of George Mason University.  The Mountain Hawks fell to the Host Patriots 3-1 in the second match of the day, with game scores 30-20, 16-30, 30-27 and 30-19.  Earlier in the day, Lehigh snapped its 36-match losing streak with a victory over the Howard Bison.  It was the Mountain Hawks first victory since November 2, 2005 when they defeated Loyola 3-1.  Lehigh came from behind to win the match 3-2 after losing the first two games to the Bison 30-21 and 30-28.  The Mountain Hawks won the final three games of the match 30-15, 30-20 and 15-6.

 

Against George Mason, Brittany Thurston recorded ten kills, while Mo McReynolds totaled nine and added three service aces.  Brittany Dickinson added nine digs and Kristin Musbach and Shannon Spafford each had two blocks.  For the Patriots, Rebecca Walter recorded 24 kills, while Jacqueline Kohler added 15 and totaled 15 digs. 

 

In the match versus Howard, the Brown and White received outstanding performances from two sophomores, Brittany Thurston and Mo McReynolds.  Thurston recorded a double-double, with a team leading 13 kills and 12 digs.  She also recorded two service aces and hit .385 for the match.  McReynolds was equally as impressive, recording 12 kills, eight digs and two service aces.

 

Howard had four players record double digit kills, but as a team they only hit .070 for the match.  Gazelle D’Artois also recorded a double-double, with eleven kills and eleven digs.

 

Lehigh as a team hit .213 overall in the match but its best play came in the final three games.  The Mountain Hawks hit .296 in the third game, .306 in the fourth game and .364 in the final decisive game.  They also played tremendous defense, recording 12 digs, ten blocks, and holding the Bison to negative attack percentages in the final three games.

 

Lehigh placed two student-athletes on the All-Tournament team including Brittany Dickinson and Brittany Thurston.  Rebecca Walter of George Mason was named the tournament’s MVP.

 

The Mountain Hawks return to action on September 7 when they compete in their third straight tournament, this one hosted by Indiana Purdue Fort-Wayne.  Lehigh takes on Chicago State in its first match beginning at 5:00 on Friday evening.  Lehigh will also take on Lipscomb and IPFW while in Indiana.
