SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Lehigh lost its second straight game, falling to Syracuse 61-54 Sunday afternoon in New York. The Mountain Hawks played the Orange close all game but were unable to take a lead at any point in the contest. The closest the Brown and White would come was one point, with a little over seven minutes remaining in the game. The loss drops Lehigh’s record to 1-3, while Syracuse picks up its second win of the year, improving to 2-1.
“We knew they were an athletic team and we needed to eliminate second chance opportunities and we did not do a good enough job of that and they were able to take advantage of it,” said head coach Sue Troyan of her team’s performance.
Alex Ross led all Lehigh players with 17 points, including a career high five three-pointers. Ross also chipped in with a team high five rebounds. Erica Prosser had 12 points, hitting all four of her free throw attempts. The Mountain Hawks were out rebounded 50-28 for the game, including 26-11 in the second half.
The Orange had three players in double figures, led by Nicole Michael with 18 points, five assists and eight rebounds. Chandrea Jones had a double-double for the Orange, scoring 10 points and adding 10 rebounds.
In the first half Syracuse jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the half, as the Orange were up 31-24 at halftime. Goodwin and Michael led Syracuse with seven points and four rebounds each.
The Mountain Hawks were able to cut the lead down to three points, with 13 minutes left in the half, thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Alex Ross, who led all players at halftime with 11 points. Ross was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Erica Morrow of Syracuse was equally as impressive hitting 2-of-4 three-point shots.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend, when they travel to Florida for a pair of games against Atlantic Sun opponents. The first game will be on Friday, when Lehigh takes on North Florida at 7 p.m., followed by a game at Jacksonville on Sunday at 1 p.m.
